IELTS Speaking Part 2 Topics 2024: Complete Guide

Part 2 is where many candidates lose marks. You're given a cue card and 1 minute to prepare, then must speak for 1-2 minutes. This guide covers the current topics and shows you how to tackle any card confidently.

How Part 2 Works

1. Examiner gives you a cue card with a topic and bullet points
2. You get 1 minute to prepare (paper and pencil provided)
3. You must speak for 1-2 minutes
4. Examiner may ask 1-2 follow-up questions

Common mistake: Speaking for only 60 seconds. Aim for 90-120 seconds.

Model Answer (Band 8):

"I'd like to talk about my high school English teacher, Mrs. Sharma, who had a profound impact on my life.

I first encountered her when I was about 15, during what was probably the most challenging year of my academic life. Unlike other teachers who focused purely on exam preparation, she was genuinely passionate about making us think critically.

What struck me most was her unconventional teaching method. Instead of drilling grammar rules, she introduced us to debates, creative writing, and even had us analyzing song lyrics to understand poetry. I remember one particular instance where she organized a mock parliament session in class, which completely transformed how I saw public speaking.

Her influence was positive for several reasons. Firstly, she made me realize that learning could be genuinely enjoyable rather than a chore. Secondly, she recognized my potential in writing and consistently encouraged me to pursue it, even submitting my essays to school magazines without telling me. When I received my first publication credit at 16, it was a life-changing moment.

To this day, I credit her with my love for language and my career path in communications. She taught me that a good teacher doesn't just transfer knowledge - they ignite curiosity."
